How to create your first scheme of work from scratch with Kobbl

A cohesive scheme of work doesn't just save time - it boosts learning outcomes by giving students a clear sense of progression. With Kobbl, you can generate a full lesson series in minutes, tailored to your class and curriculum.
One of our main goals when building Kobbl’s lesson planning software was to help teachers create continuity across lessons - so each one builds naturally on the last. That's why we create Lesson Series - which you might know as "Schemes of Work". Here, I'll walk you through how to create your first one.
If you're just interested in creating a stand-alone lesson for now, you can check out How to plan a lesson with Kobbl.
Step 1 - Creating a Lesson Series
Starting on the home page of the app, you'll want to click the Lesson Series tab, and select Plan a series of lessons. You'll need a class to do this, but if you haven't created one yet, here's a guide to set up your first class.
Step 2 - Creating a Lesson Series from Scratch
For this guide, we're going to be creating a scheme of work from scratch, so at the top of the page, select I want to create a scheme of work or series of lessons from scratch.
Choose your class, subject and the number of lessons you want to produce. Then enter the topic you’d like the lesson series to focus on. In the Curriculum Aims section, outline the key learning objectives or curriculum points you want to cover. Not sure where to start? Just click Please choose these for me and we’ll intelligently map your topic, subject, and key stage to the UK curriculum.
Next, you'll fill out the What are we working towards? section. This is where you'll set out the outcomes you want your students to achieve by the end of the series of lessons. Think of this as a culminating piece of work where they can demonstrate what they've learned. Again, if you're short on ideas, select Please choose this for me.
Once you're happy, click NEXT.
Step 3 - Viewing the Scheme
When the Scheme View loads, it'll show you all of the lessons it's created for your scheme along the top of the screen. The main view of the page is the lesson overview for the selected lesson, which gives you a summary of what will be included in the generated lesson, along with a rationale for the approach we've taken.
At the bottom right of each lesson overview, there's a Generate Lesson button, which when pressed will create the lesson and its resources, perfectly tailored to your class.
Step 4 - Use the Plan
Once the lesson plan is ready, it breaks down over several sections:
- Outline – a high-level overview of the lesson
- Intro – where you introduce the learning for the day
- Modelling – where you demonstrate key ideas or skills
- Independent – where students practise on their own
- Plenary – to wrap up and reflect on learning
- Resources – everything Kobbl has generated for this lesson
- Reflection – space to reflect and improve future lessons
Each of these sections has a brief explanation of what its purpose is, as well as what you (and the class) can expect to be doing for its duration.
Each section has a How Do I Do This? button, which when clicked will provide a detailed approach for that section of the lesson.
Step 5 - Download the Plan
If you want to download the plan in a more traditional format, you can request it in the resources section of the lesson plan page.
Step 6 - Deliver the Lesson with Confidence
With your plan ready, all that's left is to teach. Everything you need — from instructions to resources — is ready to go. You've got this!
Step 7 - Reflect and Improve Future Lessons
After delivering the lesson, return to the plan to add your reflections. These notes help refine Kobbl’s AI even further - making future lessons more personalised and effective for you and your students.
